![]() This article (or list) gives you details of the airlines flying into the Turks and Caicos Islands together with basic information on getting around and staying connected. We do recommend that you have your travel agent arrange as much for you in advance of your arrival as possible, but the following may help if you prefer to find your own way. Immigration - you will need a passport to enter the Turks & Caicos Islands and a return ticket. Until recently US citizens were able to get in on a drivers license / birth certificate but that has changed with increased security. Providenciales (""Provo" / PLS) is the main port of entry and visitors have a number of choices. International airlines flying to Provo include:
Taxis - When you arrive on Provo you can find taxis right out side the international arrivals terminal who will take you to your hotel / villa. The current fare is approximately $18-20 for the 10 minute ride. Gecko Shuttle Bus (Provo) - There is a new service called the Gecko Shuttle that provides a bus service running from Blue Hills to Turtle Cove Marina and all along all the Grace Bay Beach. You can't miss the buses which are red, with green lizards painted on the sides. They cost about $4 each trip - but you can buy a day pass for $11 or multi-day passes. Check their website at www.thegecko.tc for a route map, schedule and full details. Jitneys - While we can't recommend it we are aware that some people get around Provo by means of jitney buses and cars. The cars are probably unlicensed and not insured for public transport. The protocol is that if you are on the side of the road and you hear a "double beep" that means the driver will/may stop for you if you raise your hand. Generally they will take you where you are going for US$2.00. Car rentals - Hertz and AVIS and a few smaller rental outfits such as Scooter Bob Car rental on Providenciales (Phone: 649-946-4684 or cellular: 649-941-0262). Cell Phones - check with your cell phone provider about roaming prior to traveling if this is important to you. There doesn't seem to be a standard for what works and what doesn't. Cell phones are available for rent for $10 per day or $49.95 per week at TCI Online / MediaWorks which is an internet cafe at the 'Ports of Call' shopping mall in the center of the Grace Bay area. At peak times they may not be available so call in advance. A deposit of approximately $250.00 will be required when you pick up your phone. Although incoming calls are free, these are 'pay as you go' cell phones and you can buy 'phone cards' starting at $20.00. These cards are in addition to the rental - and are non-refundable if you don't use the minutes. Internet Access - most hotels and rental villas provide convenient internet access. If this is important to you check before you arrive. If you find yourself in a hotel / villa without access you can find an internet Cafe in Ports of Call and a second one at "the Computer Guy" on the Leeward Highway. |
